The Margins Calls For Flash Fiction/ How To Submit (Pay: $150)

The Margins is a flash fiction series by the Asian American Writers’ Workshop (AAWW) that has returned after a hiatus.

They seek submissions from Asian, Asian American, and Asian diasporic writers who have not been previously published in the series.

Submission Guidelines For The Margins

  • Submit up to two pieces of flash fiction in a single file.
  • Each piece should be between 500 and 1,000 words.
  • Title your submission with the titles of your stories separated by semicolons.
  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted; notify immediately if accepted elsewhere.
  • If an error occurs in the submission, withdraw and resubmit with corrections.

What They Want

The Margins Wants:

  • Short fiction that luxuriates in capaciousness and bursts with urgency.
  • Forms that subvert what “flash fiction” means.
  • Memorable characters and moments that linger long afterward.
  • Writing that embraces humor, sensuality, irreverence, and audacity.
  • Work that interrogates the zeitgeist, evokes history, and imagines bold futures.
  • They don’t want any previously published work.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to Asian, Asian American, and Asian diasporic writers, including those identifying as South, Southeast, East, North, and Central Asian; SWANA; Pacific Islander; and Indo-Caribbean.
  • Submissions are only open to writers who have not previously published work in the Flash Fiction series.
  • There is no entry fee.

Author Rights

  • Authors retain copyright.
  • AAWW acquires the rights to publish accepted stories in 2025.

Payment

Authors whose work is accepted will receive $150 per piece.
