The Evaristo African Poetry Prize/ How To Submit (Pay: $1,500)
The Evaristo African Poetry Prize, formerly known as the Brunel International African Poetry Prize, is an annual award presented by the African Poetry Book Fund (APBF).
The prize aims to recognize and support emerging African poets. It awards USD $1,500 to one poet for a collection of ten poems.

Submission Guidelines For The Evaristo African Poetry Prize
- Submissions are accepted electronically through Submittable between October 1 and November 1, 2024.
- Poets must submit exactly ten poems, with each poem not exceeding 40 lines.
- Poems must be written in English or be submitted with an English translation.
- Each poet may only submit one entry consisting of ten poems.
What They Want
- Ten poems that highlight original, creative, and compelling poetry by African poets.
- Poems can be on any subject or theme, as long as they adhere to the length and language guidelines.
- Previously published poems are allowed, but authors must not have a full-length poetry book published (self-published works, chapbooks, and pamphlets do not count).
Eligibility Criteria For The Evaristo African Poetry Prize
- Open to poets born in Africa, nationals or residents of an African country, or whose parents are African.
- Poets must not have previously published a full-length poetry collection.
- Submissions are limited to one set of ten poems per entrant.
- Poets must not be past or present paid employees of the University of Nebraska Press or Amalion Press, or current faculty, students, or employees at the University of Nebraska.
Author Rights
- Poets retain full copyright over their submitted poems.
- Poems may have been published before but should not have appeared in a full-length book.
Payment and Prizes
Winner: USD $1,500
- If a winning submission includes translated poems, a portion of the prize will go to the translator.
