Eligibility for Center for Fiction/Susan Kamil Emerging Writer Fellowship

  • Applicants must be current residents of one of the five boroughs of New York City.
  • Applicants must remain in New York City for the entire fellowship year.
  • Students in degree-granting programs are ineligible to apply.
  • This fellowship supports emerging writers in the early stages of their careers, with no major recognition for their work.
  • Emerging writers are defined as those who have not yet had a novel or short story collection published by a major or independent publisher.
  • Writers not under contract with a publisher for a work of fiction are eligible.
  • Stories or novel excerpts previously published in magazines or literary journals are accepted but not required.

 

Submission Guidelines

 

  • Avoid including unnecessary information unless related to eligibility or the submission process.
  • The application window opens on May 1, 2024, and closes on May 31, 2024.
  • Submit your application via the online Submission Manager with no application fee.
  • Include a fiction writing sample not exceeding 7,500 words, either a novel excerpt or one complete short story.
  • Ensure your submission is a double-spaced Word document with page numbers.
  • Avoid including personal or identifying information in your writing sample.
  • Email a PDF or jpeg scan showing proof of residency to submissions@centerforfiction.org after uploading your submission.
  • Do not include application cover letters. Include your mailing address and phone number in the email with proof of residency.
  • Avoid including unnecessary information unless related to eligibility or the submission process.
