Applications are now open for the Black Mountain Shearing Fellowship. The Black Mountain Institute at UNLV champions writers and storytellers through programs, fellowships, and community engagement. The institute makes space for meaningful collaborations and conversations; it understands service as vital. The institute also asks questions about access, the environment, and labor. It is based in Las Vegas–a place of hospitality in the middle of a desert. Between the manufactured and natural, urban and wide expanse, built and rebuilt, bounty and scarcity, it lives within narratives of destruction and preservation. From the brightest spot on the planet, the Black Mountain Institute amplifies writing and artistic expression to connect people to each other in the Las Vegas Valley, the Southwest, and beyond.

The Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute hosts residential fellowships every academic year. Visiting fellows join a community of writers and scholars in a thriving literary scene in Las Vegas and on the campus of UNLV; they are supported by individuals and groups that share the commitment to bringing writers and the literary imagination into the heart of public life.
