The Newberry, one of Chicago’s most revered cultural institutions, invites writers, journalists, filmmakers, visual and performing artists, and other humanists who wish to use the Newberry’s collection to further their creative work, to apply for The Arthur and Lila Weinberg Artist-in-Residence Fellowship. This prestigious award offers one month of support, enabling recipients to delve into the Newberry’s vast collection and advance their artistic practice. Preference is given to individuals working on projects that focus on social justice or reform.Â

Eligibility For The Arthur and Lila Weinberg Fellowship
- Who can apply: Applicants must be working outside of traditional academic settings.
- Newberry Artist-in-Residence fellowships are open to artists of any nationality.
- The Newberry sponsors international scholars under the J-1 visa.
- If you’ve received an artist-in-residence or short-term fellowship before, you cannot apply for another short-term fellowship to work on the same project.
RequirementsÂ
- A project abstract (300 words) describing the significance of your project.
- A 1,000 word project description elaborating on the abstract and plan of work.Â
- 500 words explaining why the Newberry’s collection is relevant to complete your project.
- Current Resume
- Two letters of referenceÂ
- Written works (play and video scripts; prose and poetry; works of non-fictions, etc.) cannot exceed 25 pages in length.Â
- Images and audio-visual materials.Â
- If your samples can be viewed on the web, please include all relevant web addresses.Â
- Also, include any relevant reviews of your work by professional critics.Â
