Submission Guidelines For Tales and Feather Magazine

  • Tales & Feathers Magazine specializes in cozy slice-of-life fantasy short stories, seeking character-driven narratives, gentle moments, rich worldbuilding, and stories infused with warmth and possibility.
  • Writers are encouraged to explore past publications to understand the magazine’s tone.
  • Similar to Augur Magazine, Tales & Feathers accepts multiple and simultaneous submissions, aiming to respond within eight weeks.
  • Your piece should not be longer than 2500 words for Tales & Feathers Magazine.
  • Do not submit pieces you’ve submitted before (unless they’ve undergone a significant rewrite.)
  • Submissions are done through Submittable.


What They Don’t Want


The magazine explicitly rejects:

  • Pandemic stories.
  • Excessively violent pieces.
  • Horror using neurodivergence or mental health as the horror element, comedy that punches down.
  • Speculative stories portraying non-marginalized groups suddenly experiencing marginalized struggles.
  • Anything minimizing sexual or other traumas.
  • Casual or blatant misogyny, bigotry, racism, or insensitivity is strongly discouraged.


Additional Information

 

Translations

They welcome speculative works translated into English. Translators are encouraged to provide necessary information, including a cover letter introducing their background, a short bio of the author in English, and a letter from the rights holder confirming translation permissions.

 

Intersectionality


Recognizing the importance of intersectionality, writers are encouraged (though not required) to indicate their intersections in their cover letter, contributing to a diverse and inclusive literary landscape.


Content Warnings

Including content warnings in submissions is encouraged to support the well-being of the volunteer reader team and staff.

 

Previous Contributors


While previous contributors are valued, specific guidelines for submission frequency based on the number of times a writer has been published ensure a fair and inclusive selection process.

 


Deadline


The submission window closes on January 31st, 2024. However, from February 1st to February 14th, 2024, Tales & Feathers Magazine focuses on submissions from BIPOC, trans, and/or disabled creators worldwide.
