Room Magazine Calls For Prose, Poetry & Reviews/ How To Submit (Pay: $50 – $250)

Room Magazine is a Canadian publication that welcomes submissions of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art from individuals of all marginalized genders. 

The Magazine is published with the support of the British Columbia Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. They are currently seeking submissions on the theme of “Humor.” 

With detailed guidelines provided, Room Magazine encourages writers to explore the role of laughter in resistance and to break comedic genres while addressing pressing societal issues. 

Submission Guidelines For Room Magazine 

• Room Magazine invites unpublished writing and art on any theme for issue 47.4, with a rolling submissions period until the submission limit is reached.

• They accept submissions of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art from individuals of all marginalized genders.

• They have four calls for submissions per year, including two themed and two un-themed. 

• For specific dates and themes, readers can subscribe to the newsletter or visit the website.

• Submissions must be made through Submittable; mail submissions are not accepted.

• Only original, unpublished works should be submitted.

• Simultaneous submissions are welcomed, but authors must withdraw their piece immediately if accepted elsewhere.

• All work should be submitted in 12-point font, preferably Times New Roman.

• Fiction and creative non-fiction should be double-spaced.

• Art submissions should be in black and white or grayscale, at a minimum of 300 dpi+.

Genre and Length

• Fiction and creative non-fiction: Up to 3500 words, double-spaced.

• Poetry: Up to 5 poems submitted in a single document file.

• Art submissions should be sent to art@roommagazine.com.

Additional Information

• Book reviews are accepted from Canadian reviewers and should be sent to reviews@roommagazine.com.

• They do not commission new work but pay for the right to reprint existing work.

Author Rights and Rejections

• Room Magazine purchases first North American Serial Rights and digital rights, with copyright reverting to the author after publication.

• Authors are limited to two submissions per year, with no consecutive issues.

• Response time varies from two weeks to six months, with authors encouraged to follow up after six months if they haven’t received a response.

• Authors are advised to designate Room Magazine as an approved sender to avoid responses being caught in spam filters.

Pay Rates 

Contributors are paid $50 CAD per page, up to a maximum of $200, along with 2 copies of the issue and a 1-year print subscription to Room Magazine.

Cover art contributors receive $250, along with 2 copies of the issue and a 1-year print subscription to Room Magazine.

Reviewers and web contributors are paid a flat rate of $75.
