Nautilus Magazine is a publication dedicated to exploring the connections between science, culture, and philosophy.

With a commitment to delivering thought-provoking content, Nautilus welcomes contributions from writers, artists, and interns who share a passion for science and storytelling.

Whether you’re a writer, artist, or aspiring intern, understanding the specific requirements and expectations of Nautilus will help you craft a submission that stands out.

Submission Guidelines Nautilus Magazine

  • They prefer pitches that are well-developed and thoroughly researched, offering a unique perspective on a scientific topic.
  • Nautilus prefers pitches and ideas rather than complete, unsolicited articles. This allows the editorial team to provide guidance and ensure the piece aligns with their needs.
  • While Nautilus is interdisciplinary, they emphasize scientific themes. Submissions that do not have a clear connection to science, culture, or philosophy are less likely to be accepted.
  • Nautilus values original, well-researched, and engaging content that fits within its interdisciplinary approach. Submissions that are vague or lack a clear angle are less likely to be considered.
  • Writers should send their story ideas and pitches to ideas@nautil.us.

Internships

  • Nautilus offers editorial internships for individuals interested in science and capable of both writing and fact-checking.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in science and have experience in writing and fact-checking. A background in journalism or a related field is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Prospective interns should send a resume, a brief cover letter explaining their interest in the internship, and their three best writing clips to info@nautil.us.
  • Interns at Nautilus gain hands-on experience in the editorial process, from researching and writing articles to fact-checking and assisting with various editorial tasks.

Art Submissions

  • Artists can contribute illustrations, photography, and other visual art.
  • Submissions should include a link to the artist’s portfolio and 1-2 attached web images under 1MB total. This helps the editorial team quickly assess the artist’s style and suitability for the publication.
  • Art submissions should align with Nautilus’s focus on science and its intersection with culture and philosophy.
  • Visuals that creatively explore scientific concepts or complement scientific articles are particularly valued.

Author Rights

  • Contributors retain the copyright to their work. Nautilus Magazine typically acquires first publication rights, meaning the work is first published by Nautilus but can be republished elsewhere after a specified period.
  • Contributors are credited for their work, with bylines for writers and proper attribution for artists. This recognition is important for building a portfolio and gaining exposure.
  • Nautilus may use submitted work in various formats, including print, online, and promotional materials. Contributors should review and agree to the specific usage rights outlined in the publication agreement.

Payment

Payment rates for articles and other submissions vary but typically range from $0.50 to $1.00 per word. The exact rate depends on the complexity, length, and nature of the piece.

Payment is usually processed after the work is published. Contributors may need to submit an invoice and any necessary tax forms to facilitate payment.

In some cases, Nautilus Magazine may offer additional compensation for extensive research, particularly complex topics, or other exceptional contributions.
