Elements to Include

  • Clear central argument
  • Broader stakes of the argument (why the public should care)
  • Awareness of existing discussions on the topic
  • Timeliness (why this piece matters now)
  • Accessible language that is still rigorous and sharp

Consider these elements as provisional in the pitch stage, as MENT Magazine works with writers through at least two stages of developmental revisions before copyediting.

What They Want

Please note that MENT Magazine is interested in:

  1. Critical Essays: Pieces that engage deeply with Korean media, focusing on themes like race, gender, geopolitics, diasporic communities, technology, or global media culture.
  2. Broader Relevance: Even if analyzing niche aspects of Korean media, writers should articulate why their piece matters to a wider audience not necessarily invested in the media object being analyzed.
  3. Experimental Pieces: MENT also welcomes experimental writing that blends personal and critical analysis, as long as there are clear argumentative stakes.

Payment

MENT offers $100 per essay for pieces between 2,000 and 3,000 words.
