IOWA Between the Lines 2022/ How To Apply

Applications for both sessions of Between the Lines (BTL) by IOWA 2022 are now open!

IOWA Between the Lines 2022

Between the lines is a creative writing program for students between the ages of 15 – 18. Between the Lines (BTL) has hosted young writers at the University of Iowa for a cultural exchange program that focuses on the art and craft of creative writing. Participants come together in Iowa City or online for an intensive two-week session.

 

 Eligibility For IOWA Between the Lines (BTL) 2022

 

  • Students must be between ages 15-18 
  •  They must be from the U.S.,
    Armenia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Georgia, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Pakistan, and the Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, and Ukraine.
  •   In-person and online options for U.S. students
  • Both BTL 2022 sessions are free of cost for all participants

 

Guidelines for Application 

There are two sessions for the IOWA creative writing program. The first session:

Between the Lines: Identity & Belonging

June 18 – July 2, 2022 (planned to be in-person)This session is for U.S.-based students ages 15-18.

Students who are Muslim-American, first- or second-generation immigrants, or from refugee communities, low-income households, or marginalized positions are particularly encouraged to apply.

BTL: Identity & Belonging is supported by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art’s Building Bridges Program.
The second session: 
Between the Lines: Peace & the Writing Experience
July 15-30, 2022 (online)
This session is for students ages 15-18
from the U.S. and the following countries: 
Armenia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Georgia, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, and Ukraine.
BTL: Peace and the Writing Experience is sponsored through a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. 

The BTL application deadline for U.S. and international (non-U.S.) students is March 18, 2022, by 11:59PM (23:59) CST (GMT-6).
