Global Africa Translation Fellowship/ How to Apply (Award: $5,000)
The fourth cohort of the Global Africa Translation Fellowship for the year 2025 is here.
This global fellowship offers an opportunity for scholars from the Global South to receive financial support. Also, resources for the translation of works originating from the African continent and its diaspora.
Eligibility The Global Africa Translation Fellowship
- Applicants hailing from the Global South are encouraged to apply.
- Further more, to be considered, candidates must showcase strong commitment to completing their translation project.
- More so, the fellowship is open to various projects, retranslations of classic texts, rendering previously untranslated works, translating poetry, prose, or critical theory collections.
- Lastly, both ongoing projects and new ones, achievable within the grant period, are welcome.
Submission Guidelines
- Interested applicants should note the submission deadline: Saturday, June 1, 2024.
- Upon receipt, all applications will undergo thorough review by The Africa Institute’s esteemed faculty and research fellows.
- Also, to ensure a comprehensive application, candidates must submit the following documents:
– A concise two-page CV detailing their institutional affiliation, educational qualifications, including the highest degree received, and key publications.
– More so, entries should detail a two-page narrative outlining the proposed translation project. - This narrative should elucidate the significance of the work. Also, provide a justification for retranslation if applicable, and include proposed completion dates.
– A 4–5-page sample of the original text(s) and its corresponding translation to showcase the applicant’s linguistic proficiency and translation skills.
– Documentation of the work’s copyright status, if applicable. If the work is not in the public domain, applicants must include a copy of the copyright notice from the original text. Along with a letter from the copyright holder confirming the availability of English language rights. - Name the file with the applicant’s name in this format: LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME.pdf. Use the same name in the email subject heading LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME application and send PDF as an email attachment to applications@theafricainstitute.org.
Award
- Selected projects will receive funding ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the quality and scope of the proposed translation project.
- In addition, recipients will be chosen based on the merit of their proposal and their shown capacity to execute the project effectively.
- Upon selection, the monetary award will be disbursed in two installments. with the initial payment issued at the commencement of the project and the remaining amount provided upon its successful completion.
- Furthermore, The Africa Institute requires a copy of the translated work for archival purposes only, with no intention of publication or any other usage without the awardee’s consent.
