Geez Magazine Calls For Pitches/ Submission Guidelines (Pay: $50-$100)

Geez Magazine is a quarterly print publication focused on social justice, art, and activism, catering to those on the fringes of faith in both Canada and the US. 

Geez is a dialogue among spiritually-minded individuals seeking social justice and the dismantling of empire. Their content is expressed through art, activism, and contemplation, promoting a grounded and interconnected approach to life. How To Pitch To Geez Magazine

Keep the pitches brief.

Write in a conversational style.

Explain the importance of your idea or story.

Indicate the sources you plan to use.

Also, explain why you are qualified to write the piece.

Include a brief bio about yourself.

You can also submit completed manuscripts, poems, photos, or designs.

They don’t want submissions of large image files.

Previously published works (either in print or online) are not accepted.

Lengthy pitches or those filled with jargon are also not accepted.

Geez aims to respond to as many submissions as possible, but if you do not hear back within six weeks, assume they were unable to use your submission.

 

What They Want

Definition of Activism:

For Geez, activism is a creative critique of power structures, including colonialism, patriarchy, racism, wealth concentration, police brutality, education for corporate success, and global disparity. It also involves promoting and embodying alternative practices that challenge these structures.

 

Types of Content

Poetry Submissions

Each issue typically features two or more poems

Interested poets should sign up for calls for pitches and submit up to three previously unpublished poems (three pages total) as a Word or PDF attachment to poetry@geezmagazine.org

If you do not hear back within eight weeks, assume your submission was not accepted.

Photo Submissions

Submit small, low-res JPEGs or links to online galleries. 

Do not send large image files.

Articles

Personal essays, profiles, and stories on topics like health, spirituality, activism, and interfaith experiences.

 

Eligibility Criteria For Geez Magazine 

Preference is given to:

Individuals with solid writing skills.

The unchurched or outchurched.

People holding marginalized identities.

Those with practical experience in activism and contemplation.

Diverse backgrounds, such as atheist grandmothers, small-town skateboarders, corporate defectors, and feminist parents.

 

Audience

Write for:

Disgruntled children of conservative Christians.

Spirited activists.

Over-churched souls who still believe in soulful change.

Those who haven’t been to church in years but are drawn to faith discussions.

Individuals with a desire to downshift their lives.

 

Author Rights

Geez buys only first rights, so do not submit anything that has been previously published either in print or online.

Payment

As a small nonprofit, Geez offers modest honorariums of $50 to $100, depending on the length of the piece.
