Dragon’s Roost Press Calls For Short Stories/ How To Submit (Pay: $0.06/word)
Dragon’s Roost Press has announced an open call for submissions for their upcoming fiction anthology, tentatively titled “Arkham Institutions.”
This collection will feature short stories blending Lovecraftian Mythos with various public or private institutions set in the infamous New England town of Arkham and its surrounding areas. Submission Guidelines For Dragon’s Roost Press
- The submission period is from May 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024, or until the anthology is filled.
- Length of the stories should be between 3,000 and 5,000 words.
- Format for submissions should be in .doc, .docx, .odt, or .pages format, using Times New Roman font. Preferred manuscript format is Shunn Modern Manuscript Format.
- Send submissions to submissions@thedragonsroost.biz with the subject line formatted as Arkham Institutions/story title/author’s name.
- Multiple submissions are allowed, but wait for a response on the first submission before sending another.
- Simultaneous submissions are not accepted.

What Dragon’s Roost Press Wants
Themes: Cosmic Horror stories set in and around Arkham, Innsmouth, and other mythos-related areas, focusing on public or private institutions.
Settings: Stories should be character-driven with settings that act as characters. Institutions can be newly created or existing in Lovecraft’s mythos (excluding Miskatonic University and Orne Library).
Tone: Emphasis on cosmic dread. Elements of humor and romance are acceptable if they contribute to the horror. Gore is allowed but should not replace the plot.
What They Don’t Want
- Non-consensual sex, including minors in sexual situations.
- Explicit sexual material.
- Animal cruelty.
- Content reflecting problematic viewpoints.
- Fan Fiction, Slash Fiction, or any material containing characters not created by the author.
- Reprints, poetry, novellas, flash fiction, or artwork.
- AI-generated content.
Eligibility Criteria For
- Submissions are open to all authors. BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ characters and authors are particularly welcome.
- Submissions must be original works for which the author retains rights.
- Stories should be well-edited, with minimal spelling and grammatical errors.
Author Rights
Dragon’s Roost Press seeks First North American Rights. Authors should consider how this might affect the future marketability of their stories.

Closing date is on June 30, 2024, or earlier if the anthology is filled.
Payment
- Rate: $0.06 per word.
- Additional Compensation: One contributor’s copy in both paperback and digital formats.
Additional Information
- The anthology will be published in paperback and digital formats, with an expected release date of October 2024.
- A portion of the profits will be donated to Last Day Dog Rescue.
- A campaign will run later in the year to help offset production costs, but it will not affect payment or publication.
