The Golden Baobab Prize was established in 2008 with the aim of “encouraging the writing of African literature for children and young adults”. Awarded each year to African writers of literature for children and young adults, the prize was endowed to identify African literary giants of the next generation and produce classic African stories that will be appreciated for years to come.
You can apply for the Prize if any of these categories interest you:
1. The Golden Baobab Prize for Picture Books-
This is awarded for the best story targeting a reader audience of ages 4-8.
2. The Golden Baobab Prize for Early Chapter Books-
This is awarded for the best story targeting a reader audience of ages 9-11.
3. The Golden Baobab Prize for Illustrators-
This is awarded for the best artwork that matches illustration briefs provided, intended for children ages 4-11.
Prize:
In addition to the $5,000 cash prize, winners will also receive the following:
• Press publicity,
• Winning stories are guaranteed a publishing deal,
• Finalist writers are connected with publishers across Africa and
• Finalist illustrators participate in exhibitions and workshops.
