Creative Writing News is happy to announce our second webinar, which will help aspiring African writers learn about applying to schools for Ph.D. in Creative Writing and English Literature. The panel will feature writers who have passed through the hurdles of the application process in various schools and are ready to give back to others to help them in their own process.

Speakers
Chioma Iwunze-Ibiam’s literary works have appeared in several literary journals and magazines. She has received several honors and recognition from the Commonwealth Short Story Writers’ Prize, the James McConkey Master of Fine Arts Creative Writing Award, the David L. Picket’84 Summer Fellowship, the Cecilia Unaegbu Prize for Fiction, the Voice of America Award for flash fiction and others. A proud alumna of Cornell University’s MFA in Creative Writing Program’23 and the Farafina Trust Creative Writing Workshop, her works of literature have attracted the support of esteemed institutions like Fidelity Bank, Goethe-Institut, Ebedi Hills Writing Residency Program, FEMRITE and so on.
Chijioke K. Onah
Chijioke K. Onah is a Ph.D. candidate in the Literature in English Department at Cornell University. He specializes in African and African Diaspora Literature, Anglophone Postcolonial Literature, and Environmental Humanities. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Combined English and History at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. For his Masters degree, he studied at the Goethe University of Frankfurt, with an Erasmus-funded exchange at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Before coming to Cornell in 2020, he spent a year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His dissertation won the inaugural 2023 Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Innovation Fellowship,

 

Jane Kalu

Jane Kalu studies Creative Writing and Literature at the University of Southern California. Her short fiction has been featured or is forthcoming in American Short Fiction, Boston Review, Narrative Magazine, The Hopkins Review, Isele Magazine, and elsewhere. Jane is a graduate of the MFA program at the University of New Mexico, where she was the recipient of the Joseph Badal Prize and the Hillerman/McGarrity Prize. Other awards include residencies and fellowships from Vermont Studio Center, StoryKnife and American short fiction.

Samuel Kọ́láwọlé

Samuel Kọ́láwọlé was born and raised in Ibadan, Nigeria. He is the author of a new, critically acclaimed novel, The Road to the Salt Sea.

His work has appeared in AGNI, New England Review, Georgia Review, The Hopkins Review, Gulf Coast, Washington Square Review, Harvard Review, Image Journal, and other literary publications.

He has received numerous residencies and fellowships, and has been a finalist for the Graywolf Press Africa Prize, shortlisted for UK’s The First Novel Prize, and won an Editor-Writer Mentorship Program for Diverse Writers.

Samuel Kọ́láwọlé studied at the University of Ibadan and holds a Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing with distinction from Rhodes University, South Africa; is graduate of the MFA in Writing and Publishing at Vermont College of Fine Arts; and earned his PhD in English and Creative Writing from Georgia State University.

He has taught creative writing in Africa, Sweden, and the United States, and currently teaches fiction writing as an Assistant Professor of English and African Studies at Pennsylvania State University.
