Copper Nickel is a USA national literary journal housed at the University of Colorado Denver. They publish a broad range of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and writing in translation. They are particularly interested in works that consider sociohistorical themes.
Copper Nickel Submissions are open between September 1-December 15, and January 15-March 1 yearly. Responses to each submitted piece are typically within eight weeks.
Guidelines for Copper Nickel Submission
Submissions to Copper Nickel are made through their Submittable. Submit your original, unpublished work, although Copper Nickel accepts simultaneous submissions as long they are informed.
Poetry writers are allowed to submit four to six poems.
Story and essay writers are allowed only one submission. There are no length restrictions, but longer-than-normal pieces have to earn their space.
Copper Nickel Submittable account can only receive 1800 discrete submissions each month, after which the account will close until the new month. Submit early to avoid being shut out.
Presently, Copper Nickel has a $2 submission fee.
Payment for Copper Nickel Submission
Copper Nickel pays $30 per printed page in the issue with two copies of the issue to which the piece is printed and a year subscription for other issues.
They also award two $500 prizes per issue for the most exciting work in each issue, as determined by a vote of the editorial staff.
