As a not-for-profit project published by the Quebec Writers’ Federation, it emphasizes inclusivity and diversity in literature. If you are interested in having your work published in this esteemed literary magazine, please follow the submission guidelines below.
Submission Guidelines For Carte Blanche MagazineÂ
- Submissions are open to various genres including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, translations (French to English), and comics.
- Submissions for issue 48 open on December 20, 2023, and close on February 15, 2024.
- Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but creators must indicate if their piece is being considered elsewhere and withdraw it if accepted elsewhere.
- Only unpublished pieces are accepted, including those not previously published on personal websites or social media.
- Contributors are encouraged to submit no more than once a year unless solicited by an editor.
- They don’t want any previously published pieces.

What They Want
Comics
- They seek comics that tell compelling stories and push the boundaries of narrative within the comics form.
- They are also open to all styles, subjects, shapes, and sizes.
- Comics will be displayed on the web using a Squarespace image slideshow.
Creative Nonfiction
- They are accepting nonfiction narratives including memoir, personal essay, and literary journalism.
- Factual accuracy is paramount.
- Maximum word count is 3500 words.
Fiction
- They are open to all kinds of fiction.
- Maximum word count is 3500 words per story (multiple stories must not exceed 3500 words total).
Poetry
- They welcome poems in any form.
- Maximum submission is 3 poems per entry.
- Submission cap enforced; early submission encouraged.
Translation
- They accept English translations of French poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.
- They also require proof of permission from the copyright holder of the original work.
- Original work should ideally be included with the translation.
Eligibility Criteria
- They welcome submissions from Canadian and international creators.
- Carte Blanche emphasizes the intersectionality of lived experiences and encourages submissions from marginalized voices, including LGBTQ2S+ individuals, BIPOC, disabled individuals, and those with mental health challenges or neurodivergence.
- They are also affiliated with the Quebec Writers’ Federation and may prioritize Quebec-based creators in some issues.
Author Rights
- They ask for first world serial rights and the right to archive the work on the website.
- The copyright reverts to the author upon publication.
Payment
They pay an honorarium of $75 for each published piece.
