Capital And Main Publications Is Accepting Pitches/ How To Submit (Pay: $250 – $500)
Capital and Main is a nonprofit news organization that reports on economic inequality as well as race, climate change, immigration, education and health both in California and nationally.
Their stories are co-published in a wide range of outlets, including USA Today, Newsweek, the Guardian, Fast Company, the American Prospect and many others. Capital & Main has won dozens of awards over the past five years including seven first-place honors at this year’s Southern California Journalism Awards. They publish daily and accept pitches all the time.
Submission Guidelines For Capital And Main
- You are to help them cover some of the most consequential issues of our time.
- They are eager to work with journalists of diverse backgrounds, freelance photographers, and graphic designers.
- They welcome pitches from freelance journalists of color who are interested in covering income inequality, climate change, the green economy, housing, health care, public education, immigration, race, and criminal justice.
- Due to the high volume of pitches Capital and Main receives, they can only respond to those story proposals they decide to accept. Capital and Main will reply within one business week of receipt of an accepted pitch.
- They will not accept opinion or personal essays from first timers, unless they specifically commission one.
What They Want And What They Don’t Want
They want:
- Anecdotal narratives from everyday people impacted by the issue(s) covered in the story.
- As much original reporting as possible, including remarks from experts, elected leaders, government workers, businesses, etc.
- Opposing viewpoints.
- Supporting documents; additional data is highly encouraged.
- No anonymous sources.
They do not want:
- Personal essays, anecdotes.
- Opinion pieces.
- Previously published material.
- Unfounded hearsay or rumors.
How To Pitch
Send your pitches to stories@capitalandmain.com with the following information:
- Your full name.
- Contact information including email and phone number.
- Link to website(s) that show your past work.
- A very concise summary of your story idea.
- Make sure your story idea fits along the focus of their coverage on inequality related to class, race, immigration, gender, corporate accountability, climate change and energy, education and health.
Payment
From $250 – $500 per story.
