Briarpatch Magazine Is Accepting Pitches/ How To Submit (Pay: $350)

Briarpatch Magazine is a national publication based on Treaty 4 territory in the Prairies with nearly 50 years of history. 

The magazine focuses on building strong analysis for the left in Canada, de-centering whiteness, capital, and cis-hetero patriarchy by amplifying marginalized voices and narratives. 

They cover a wide range of topics including current events, grassroots activism, electoral politics, economic justice, ecology, labor, food security, gender equity, Indigenous struggles, international solidarity, and other politically important issues.

 

Submission Guidelines For Briarpatch Magazine

  • Briarpatch Magazine publishes bi-monthly.
  • They welcomes pitches from unpublished writers, seasoned freelancers, front-line activists, and anyone with a compelling story.
  • Pitches should be sent to pitch@briarpatchmagazine.com.
  • Include contact information, an estimated word count, a list of recent publications (if applicable), and a short writing sample.
  • Submissions should be aimed at a progressive, non-specialist audience and avoid academic jargon.

 

What They Want

Features: In-depth articles on various topics, including non-fiction, news stories, investigative journalism, personal essays, interviews, op-eds, and photo essays. Pitches should clearly outline the story direction and proposed interviews.

  • Length: 1,500-2,500 words
  • Pay: $250

Research-based Articles: Investigative pieces with extensive primary research.

  • Length: 2,000-2,500 words
  • Pay: $350

Profiles, Short Essays, Reviews, Reading Lists, Online-only Articles, and Parting Shots: Shorter pieces with a decisive stance.

  • Length: 1,500 words or less
  • Pay: $150

Interviews: Pitches for interviews with activists, authors, or experts on important issues.

Reading Lists: Reviews of 4-6 pieces of media related to a pressing political issue.

  • Length: 1,000 words
  • Pay: $150

Reviews: Short reviews of recent books, music, films, and other media.

  • Length: 300-1,000 words
  • Pay: $150

Illustrations & Photography: High-quality artwork and photography.

  • Spot illustrations/photos: $100
  • Feature illustrations/photos: $150
  • Cover art: $300

Blog: Time-sensitive, online-only articles.

  •  Length: under 1,500 words
  • Pay: $150

 

What They Don’t Want

  • Broad or vague topics without a clear driving argument.
  • Pre-written stories.
  • Academic papers or thesis submissions.
  • Articles on U.S. electoral politics, celebrity profiles, or PR firm pitches.
  • Poetry or short stories outside of their annual writing contest.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to unpublished writers, seasoned freelancers, front-line activists, and others with a compelling story.
  • Must align with Briarpatch’s mandate and audience: anti-capitalist, anti-colonial, feminist analysis of grassroots social justice issues in Canada.
  • There’s no entry fee.

 

Author Rights

Contributors would participate in an intensive, collaborative editing process. Expect two or three rewrites over the course of a month.

 

Pay Rates At Briarpatch Magazine 

  • $150 for profiles, short essays, reviews, reading lists, online-only articles, and parting shots.
  • $250 for feature stories and photo essays.
  • $350 for research-based articles and investigative reporting.
