Border Crossing Journal Is Accepting Submissions/ How To Submit (Pay: $100)

Border Crossing Journal is especially interested in writing that crosses boundaries in genre or geography, and voices that are not often heard in mainstream publications. 

The best way to see what they mean by this is to read their latest issue. All of their submissions go through a rigorous editorial board process.

Below are the submission guidelines for the upcoming 2024 issue of their literary journal. Your interest in contributing to their platform is appreciated. They prioritize diverse voices and boundary-crossing writing.

 

Submission Guidelines For Border Crossing Journal

  • They seek original, unpublished work that challenges traditional boundaries in genre and geography. 
  • Their journal aims to amplify voices often overlooked by mainstream publications. 
  • Explore their latest issue to understand their preferences. 
  • Keep in mind that submissions engaging with AI require documentation, with a clear distinction between human and AI elements.
  • They only accept original, unpublished work for which writers can grant them first North American serial rights.
  • Also please note that the editors may make minor copyedits to your work upon acceptance.
  • With your submission, please include an email address you regularly check and a brief biography of about fifty words. 
  • They accept simultaneous submissions; however, please return to the submission manager and, using the “Messages” tab, add a message to your submission in Submittable indicating which part of your submission was accepted elsewhere.
  • Response time is roughly 6-9 months.

  • Please ensure that your submissions meet the criteria outlined below and use their submission manager to submit your work.

 

Flash Fiction

  • Submit pieces up to 1000 words or microfiction up to 400 words each. 
  • Please adhere to the guidelines mentioned and submit no more than two flashes or micros, up to 1000 words total, in one single document.
  • Do not submit stories separately. Include a word count for each story.
  • Remember that they value your creativity and encourage unique storytelling.

Poetry

  • Express yourself through poetry by submitting 3-5 poems in one document, totaling up to 10 pages. 
  • They welcome prose poems as well. 
  • Follow the guidelines provided and submit your poetry during the official reading period. 
  • Remember, they value your voice and appreciate the diversity you bring to their literary space.

Eligibility Criteria

  • There is no reading fee.
  • Submissions are open to everyone.

 

Deadline

The deadline for the reading period is on February 1st.

 

Payment

While they currently cannot offer payment to all authors, they started featuring selected authors in their online issues. 

With volume 5, their first online edition, they introduced paid features. Each year, one author from each genre may be selected for a paid feature, including prominent placement in the online journal, a published interview with the editors, and a $100 honorarium.
