The A Public Space Writing Fellowships support early-career writers who embrace risk and originality in their work. Established in 2014, these fellowships provide a platform for emerging voices to develop their craft, gain editorial guidance, and connect with the literary community.
Each year, three fellows are selected to receive $1,000, editorial support, a one-year subscription to A Public Space, access to Master Classes, and the opportunity to participate in a public reading.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must:
- Be unpublished in book form and not contracted to publish a book in the U.S.
- Be writers of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry.
- Have not published or been contracted to publish a book-length work in the U.S. (self-published books, academic texts, and translations are allowed).
- Submit work in English (international applicants are welcome).
- Submit only one application.
Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows receive:
- Editorial support to prepare their work for A Public Space.
- A $1,000 honorarium.
- A one-year subscription to A Public Space.
- Complimentary access to all Master Classes during the fellowship year.
- A chance to meet publishing professionals virtually.
- The opportunity to participate in a public reading.
How to Apply
They will accept applications from March 1 to March 31, 2025 via Submittable. The category will open on March 1, 2025, and closes at 11:59 p.m. (ET) on March 31, 2025.
Required Materials:
- Résumé (PDF or Word format).
- Cover Letter (PDF or Word format) containing:
- A one-paragraph biography.
- A favorite paragraph from a book (any genre, any time period).
- A brief explanation of why that passage resonates with you.
- Manuscript Submission (PDF or Word format):
- Fiction/Nonfiction: Up to 6,000 words.
- Poetry: Up to 15 pages.
- A Public Space will publish the submitted piece if selected.
How to become a more eloquent writer
They accept Simultaneous submissions, but if any part of the work is accepted elsewhere, the applicant must withdraw their entire application. They will not accept any replacements after the deadline.
Selection Timeline
- March 1 – March 31, 2025: Application window.
- May 27, 2025: Applicants are notified.
- June 1 – December 31, 2025: Fellowship period.
