Jaggery Submission/How To Submit ($125 USD + Publication)

Jaggery is a literary journal that offers the best writing by and about South Asians and their diaspora.

They publish art, essays, fiction, poetry, reviews, and an advice column. As long as you notify them immediately your work is published elsewhere, they accept simultaneously Submission.

Eligibility for Jaggery Submission

  • South Asian nationality which includes;

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, The Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka

  • No entry fee
  • No age restrictions

Submission Deadline

December 15, 2020

Guidelines for Jaggery Submission

  • Every Submission should revolve around South Asia or it’s diaspora
  • Submission is via submittable
  • Work will be reviewed blindly so the author’s name should not appear on the manuscript
  • Confirmation of submission is sent on receipt
  • You can check your submission status by signing in to your submittable account
  • Editorial response with regards to submission will be available 2-3 weeks after the deadline
  • The author’s bio will be requested on acceptance

Fiction

  • Stories should be under 5,000 words
  • Excerpt from longer pieces are accepted but it MUST be capable of standing alone as a complete work.

Poetry

  • Original unpublished pieces, as well as translations of poems written in South Asian languages, are accepted
  • Maximum of 3 poems
  • Maximum of 10 pages

Arts/Photography

  • Photography, painting, digitally designed/compiled works, experimental art projects are accepted
  • Maximum of 3-5 images
  • JPG Format
  • File size should not exceed 500kb per image

Book Review

  • Accepts fair and unbiased reviews of academic/popular cultural books (creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry), film, music, and theater
  • Work should include a description of contents and a critical appraisal
  • Word count of 1,000 words

Essay/Interviews

  • Opinion pieces, literary criticism, interviews, editorial journals, travel writing, memoirs, and creative nonfiction are accepted
  • Essays must be no more than 5000 words, excluding references and headings but including endnotes.
  •  Bibliographic information about any works consulted in the crafting of your piece should be comprehensively listed in a Works Cited page at the end of your essay, formatted according to MLA guidelines.
  • Use endnotes rather than footnotes. Notes should be numerical (1, 2, 3)
  • Entitle list of endnotes “Notes.” This should appear before the Works Cited page. Endnotes should be sparsely used for contextual information.
  • Acknowledgements should appear before “Notes,” in a section labeled “Acknowledgements”
  • Avoid abbreviations and acronyms.
