If you love writing sonnets, the Spencer Poetry Awards Sonnet Competition offers a chance to showcase your work and win $1,000. This annual contest welcomes undergraduate students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities to submit their best sonnets.

How to Submit Your Sonnets

Eligibility

  • You must be an undergraduate student at a U.S. college or university.

Submission Guidelines

  • Submit up to three original, unpublished sonnets.
  • Format each poem as a PDF (preferred) or Word file.
  • Include the following details in your document:
    • Title page with:
      • Your name, address, email, and phone number
      • The college or university you attend
      • Your referring professor’s name & email
    • Your poem (you may include dedications, references, and acknowledgments).
  • Name the file as LastName_FirstName_PoemTitle (or use the first line if untitled).

Submission Deadline

Email all entries to poetry@wcupa.edu by February 28, 2025.
Use the subject line: “WCU Poetry Awards.”

Judging Process

  • Judges will evaluate entries without seeing the authors’ names.
  • Organizers will remove identifying information before review.
