2025 Counter Histories Fellowship / How to Apply (Up to $10,000)

Magnum Foundation invites photographers to apply for the 2025 Counter Histories Fellowship, supporting projects reframing the past to engage with urgent questions of the present and future.

 

Launched in 2018, Counter Histories elevates suppressed histories, reframes dominant narratives, and challenges power structures embedded in archives. Also, This initiative explores creative possibilities in historical inquiry and photographic storytelling, offering alternative narratives.

 

Fellowship Details

  • Grant: $10,000
  • Virtual fellowship: April 1, 2025 – November 31, 2025
  • 25-30 hours of virtual programming
  • Discretionary funds: up to $1,000
  • Eight-month project development workshops

 

Eligibility For The 2025 Counter Histories Fellowship 

 

  • Photographers with existing projects responding to the Counter Histories theme
  • No required training or experience
  • Finally, the fellowship is encouraging applications from underrepresented communities to apply.

  • What can an archive of the future look like?
  • How do artists harness the creative potential of gaps, absences, and silences in archives and historical records?
  • How can artists reconstruct histories lacking photographic documentation?
  • In what ways can found photographs and artist-driven archives enrich our understanding of the past, present, and future?
  • How do artists confront photography’s role in perpetuating violent histories and limiting potential futures?
  • How can emerging technologies enhance, expand, or challenge photographic narratives?
  • By reexamining memory-holding objects (monuments, heirlooms, etc.), how can artists develop alternative methods of preserving memories?
  • Why do artists prioritize certain histories over others?
  • How can artists honor personal, private, or community-specific histories?
  • What innovative approaches can artists pioneer to promote respect and care in image circulation?
  • How do artists explore memory’s impact on archive creation and interpretation?
  • How can art addressing historical trauma or loss facilitate healing and reconciliation within affected communities?
