The McKitterick Prize/How To Submit (Pay: £4,000)

The McKitterick Prize is endowed by Tom McKitterick and supported by the Hawthornden Literary Retreat. It is awarded annually to an author over the age of 40 for their debut novel.

This novel can be published, self-published, or unpublished, as long as it has not been preceded by any previous novel by the author. Submission Guidelines The McKitterick Prize

If you are interested in this prize, please follow the guidelines closely.

  • The novel can be published, self-published, or unpublished.
  • For unpublished manuscripts, submit the first 30 page.
  • The novel must be the author’s first, although previously published children’s books do not count against eligibility.
  • The prize is open to works of fiction.

 What They Want

  • Debut fiction novels that showcase original storytelling by an author over 40.
  • Novels may be on any subject or theme, as long as they are fiction and represent the author’s first full-length novel.

Eligibility Criteria For The McKitterick Prize

  • Open to authors over the age of 40 at the time of submission.
  • Authors may have previously published works in other genres (such as children’s books), but not adult fiction.
  • Submissions must be in English.
  • Novels must either be published, self-published in the UK, or unpublished.

Author Rights

  • Authors retain full copyright of their work.
  • Shortlisted and winning novels are publicized on The Society of Authors platform and affiliated media.

Payment and Prizes

Winner: £4,000

Runner-Up: £2,000

Shortlisted Authors: £1,000 (up to four shortlisted authors)

Deadline

The deadline for submissions is Thursday, 31 October 2024.
