2011 Narrative Travel Writing Contest
TransitionsAbroad invites interested writers to submit articles on their travel experiences. Professional, amateur, freelance and aspiring travel writers are expected to show in the entries how traveling at a slower pace and adapting to the space and time of the other people have deepened their experiences as well as influenced their perception of the people and the destinations.
The emphasis is not so much on the beautiful and amazing experiences. What the Editors of TransitionsAbroad are looking for are ‘inspirational pieces which will lead others to experience the sense of engagement as a global citizen’.
To apply, submit an original and previously unpublished essay from 1000 to 5000 words. Photos – in .jpg or .gif format – illustrating the essay are also welcome and will be considered part of the essay.
To contest attach your essay in Word Format, or copy and paste it on the body of the e-mail. Ensure that the essay title, full name, complete postal address and phone number are in both the e-mail and Word document; and add a brief bio if you so choose. The subject title of the e-mail should be: “Narrative Travel Writing Essay Entry”. The e-mail should be sent to: narrativewritingcontest@transitionsabroad.com. Deadline for submissions of essays is 5th January 2011.
Accompanying photos which enhance the narrative are highly preferred. Photojournalistic essays or accompanying videos will also be considered, and humor is appreciated where appropriate. Editors of TransitionsAbroad.com will judge entries based upon the following criteria: Sensitivity to the people and culture being described; ability to engage the reader; and literary quality.
Winners will be notified by phone, mail, or e-mail by January 15, 2011. Their articles will be published by February 28, 2011 due to the time required for all writers spanning the globe to send in Agreements, and payment to be cashed.
The 1st place winner gets a prize of $500: second place winner gets $150 and third place winner will receive $100. Runners-up whose articles are selected will get a payment of $50.
