Apply for the PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants

 

PEN America is now accepting applications for the PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants, which provide vital support for the translation of book-length works.

These grants aim to promote the translation of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction that have not previously been translated into English or have only appeared in outdated or flawed translations.

 

Grant Details and Categories

  • Ten grants ranging from $3,000 to $4,000 each will be awarded to translators working on eligible projects.
  • In addition to these general grants, a $5,000 grant, the PEN Grant for the English Translation of Italian Literature, will support the translation of a book of fiction or nonfiction from Italian into English.
  • Furthermore, three separate grants of $5,000 each, the PEN/Faranak Adibi Translation Grants, will support translations of works originally written in Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish, and Turkish.

Eligibility and Submission Guidelines

Manuscripts involving up to two translators are eligible for consideration. To apply, translators must submit the following materials using the online submission system by August 1, 2024:

  • A translation sample of 8 to 10 pages of poetry or prose
  • A copy of the same passage in the original language
  • A biography and bibliography of the translated author
  • A project statement
  • The curriculum vitae of the translator
