If There’s Anyone Left Calls For Short Stories/ Submission Guidelines (Pay: $0.08/word)

“If There’s Anyone Left” is currently open for submissions for Volume 5. Proceeds from this volume will go toward Palestinian relief organizations.

Submission Guidelines For If There’s Anyone Left

  • Stories must be no more than 1,000 words, and this is a firm limit. 
  • Submissions should be in DOC or DOCX formats only. 
  • Email submissions to iftheresanyoneleft@gmail.com with the subject line: `SUBMISSION: [story title here] AUTHOR [your name here]`. 
  • A cover letter is required, which should include a short bio and your PayPal email address. If you’re a member of SFWA, HWA, Codex, or other writerly groups, please let us know here.
  • Please do not summarize your piece in the cover letter. 
  • If There’s Anyone Left allows simultaneous submissions, but you must notify them if your story is accepted elsewhere. 
  • Feedback may be provided occasionally, but it is not guaranteed. 
  • If you do not want feedback, please state this in your email. 
  • You will not receive a confirmation email upon submission.
  • They do not want submissions from individuals who are not part of the marginalized groups mentioned above. 
  • They also do not want stories that are hateful, gratuitously violent, or ideologically exclusive.
  • You may send up to three submissions per window. This can be all at once or one at a time if you like.

 

What They Want

If There’s Anyone Left Wants:

  • They are looking for science fiction and speculative fiction stories. 
  • While other elements can be present, the core of the story must fall within these genres. 
  • This call is open to marginalized members of the sci-fi/speculative fiction community, including people of color, LGBTQ2S+ community members, people of marginalized genders, and disabled or neurodiverse individuals. 
  • Stories must be inclusive and should not promote hate, gratuitous violence, torture, rape, racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, or any other form of hate.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Only people of color, LGBTQ2S+ individuals, members of marginalized genders, and disabled or neurodiverse people are eligible to submit. 
  • Stories must not be AI-generated or AI-assisted.
  • There is no entry fee.

 

Author Rights

  • If accepted, they will purchase worldwide electronic rights for 6 months from the date of purchase and non-exclusive rights for the life of the magazine. 
  • They will also acquire non-exclusive print and electronic rights. 
  • Authors must be the original creators and copyright holders of their submissions. 
  • Authors must be at least 18 years old. 
  • If accepted, authors will sign a contract agreeing to these rights and conditions.

 

Payment

They pay $0.08 per word for original fiction. Payment is made via PayPal, but alternatives can be arranged if PayPal is not feasible for the author.
