Haunted Words Press Submission/ How to Submit (Payment: Publication Magazine Copy)

Are you a writer of the ghoulish, chilling curses, wronged witches, spellbound spirits? Then Haunted Words Press is calling on you.  

Haunted Words Press, is a literary magazine publishing tales of the gothic, the peculiar, and the downright spooky for middle grade and young adult readers. For this issue, they are accepting: short stories, flash fiction, poetry, visual art, and cover art submissions. The theme of this sixth issue is: Ghoulish Grimoires. Learn how to interpret the theme in your writing.

Eligibility for Haunted Words Press Submission

• Short stories

  • Please only submit one piece if submitting a short story

  • Short stories should be between 1000-5000 words

• Flash fiction

  • Please submit no more than three pieces if submitting flash fiction

  • They would prefer flash fiction to be no more than 750 words, but please do not exceed 1000 words

• Poetry

  • Please submit no more than three pieces if submitting poetry

  • Poetry should be no longer than two pages

• Visual art

  • Please submit no more than three pieces if submitting visual art

• Cover Art

  • Please submit no more than three pieces if submitting cover art

• Their audience is middle grade (8-12) and young adult (12-18).

• They want to publish works of the spooky, the dark, the peculiar, the strange, the magical. Give them romance, horror, mystery, adventure. any and all genres are accepted. Learn how to create interesting characters to captivate readers. 

Guidelines for Submission

• Email your submission to hauntedwordspress@gmail.com.

• Include the name of the submission call, the title of your work, and your name or pen name in the subject line (example: ISSUE SIX: GHOULISH GRIMOIRES – TITLE – AUTHOR/ARTIST NAME). If submitting cover art please also include this in the subject line (example: ISSUE SIX: GHOULISH GRIMOIRES – COVER ART – ARTIST NAME).

• In the body of your email, give them a short premise for your piece in no more than three words (example: YA | ROMANCE | DEATH), the word count of your piece (if a short story or flash fiction) and a short bio no more than 100 words about yourself. 

• Please ensure that you put the audience (middle grade or young adult) in your submission email so that they can properly sort it when responding and deciding!

• IMPORTANT: submit the work itself as an attachment, do not copy and paste it into the body of the email!

• Short stories and flash fiction should be in Times New Roman with 12 pt. font and 1.5 line spacing. 

• Use page numbers if your work is longer than one page. 

• For short stories, flash fiction, and poetry, attach the piece(s) as a pdf.

• For visual art, attach the piece(s) as either a jpg or png.

Payment fo Haunted Words Press Submission

You will not be paid for any pieces that are accepted – we make no money from it either, it’s in existence because we want it to be and because we hope others do too.

Submission window is from September 25th 2023 to October 25th, 2023.
