Southword Submissions is Open for Poetry and Prose Writers / How to Apply (Payment: €50-€350)

Southword Literary Journal currently has its poetry and prose submissions open for all writers.

Southword: New International Writing is a print literary journal published twice a year by the Munster Literature Centre. Founded in 1993, the Munster Literature Centre (Ionad Litríochta an Deiscirt) is a non-profit arts organisation dedicated to the promotion and celebration of literature, especially that of Munster. They organise festivals, workshops, competitions, and fellowships. Their publishing arm, Southword Editions, publishes Southword, an English-language biannual literary journal, Aneas, an Irish-language yearly literary journal, as well as poetry chapbooks, anthologies and translations. Southward submissions is open to all writers, both local and international whoare able to write eloquently and stylishly. 

 

Poetry Guidelines for Southword Submissions

Poetry Submissions are open until the 29th of February, 2024.

  1.  All poems must be previously unpublished and submitted via their Submittable in the appropriate categories during open reading times only. Submissions cannot be accepted by post or email.
  2. There is a strict submission limit of 4 poems per person.
  3. Poems should be submitted in a single file, with poems separated by titles or page breaks.
  4.  Work should be submitted in one of the following file formats: .doc, .docx, .txt, .rtf.
  5. If submitting poems and prose simultaneously, they will be considered by different editors at different times, so to be sure of a response please submit separately, via the appropriate Submittable category.
  6. When Submittable prompts you to type a ‘cover letter‘, please include an up-to-date biographical note and contact details including an email address.
  7. Works of translation where the original author is still in copyright will require the bios of both the original author and the translator. 
  8. Submittable will notify you as to the success of your submission. Due to the large volume of submissions received, the editor may take up to 10 weeks after the submission deadline to make their decision. The March issue of Southword publishes poems selected through the Gregory O’Donoghue Poetry Competition.
  9. If you need to withdraw a submitted poem/poems, please send a note to the editor via Submittable.
  10. If your work has been selected from an unsolicited submission and published in Southword before, they ask that you please wait two years before submitting again.

Prose Guidelines for Southword Submissions

Prose Submissions will open on the 1st of February, 2024.

Payment

  1. Authors are paid €50 per poem published in Southword.
  2. Authors are paid €300 per story published in Southword.

 

Deadline

  1. Poems are considered between January 1st and February 29th each year for their Winter issue. PLEASE NOTE: after the close of the submission date, the editors will make their selection.
  2.  Short stories are considered between February 1st, 2024 and March 31st, 2024
